The most powerful of the Scottish clans, and claiming a descent from the ancient High Kings of Ireland, the Campbells and their many branches experienced both great fortune and tragic misfortune. The clan was first settled in Argyll in the early thirteenth century, and went on to gain high honours and titles, including Earldom of Argyll. The 10th Earl received a dukedom in 1701.
